Thank you to everyone who emailed following last week’s update asking for views on mask wearing. The majority who responded wanted masks to go.
We are governed by a few different Government regulations, guidance for HE institutions, guidance for employers, guidance for workplaces where there is public access (such as clinics) and guidance on close contact services (which specifically names acupuncture) and is what the BAcC guidelines are based on.
Because we are open to the public we cannot get rid of masks just yet. Last week I had heard the Government were contemplating changing this, but have since stalled over making changes. In the meantime, anyone entering the college must continue to wear a face covering and wear it while they are in college. However from tomorrow we are going to allow for mask exemptions. If you have a valid mask exemption you will no longer need to wear a mask around college. There is a sunflower lanyard which can be purchased from supermarkets and amazon (of course) to indicate exemption and may be a nice thing to do if you are exempt.
The screens around the reception desk means that admin sitting at reception will no longer be required to wear a mask.
Mask exemption applies to being in college. There is no need for anyone to wear a mask in the bistro.
Where mask exemption does not apply is in clinic, observations and practical classes. We are bound by the close contact regulations and everyone must wear a mask covering their mouth and nose in these three settings. Furthermore, when working on areas on the face and neck, which includes looking at tongues, a mask and a visor/goggles (not reading glasses) must be worn.
We will continue to monitor the situation and now it appears the majority are in favour of dispensing with masks, we will be able to act more swiftly when we can finally remove them. In the meantime, please feel free to email me if you feel your views have not been heard.
